Ghana: Arrest of illegal Chinese Miners

Al Qarra - In Ghana the police have arrested 150 suspected illegal miners from China. The suspects, are being detained in the capital Accra. They will be deported after an investigation.

According to Ghanian authorities, the Chinese have been illegally operating gold mining in 4 regions: including the Central Ashanti region, as well as the eastern and western region.

In recent years, Chinese nationals, mainly from Shanglin, have been smuggled into Ghana. Drawn by illegal gold mining, there could possibly be 50,000 undocumented workers in the country since 2005. A situation which has forced Ghana’s president John Dramani Mahama to take action.
