Huge earthquake strikes Russia's far east

A magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck Russia's eastern coast on Friday, shaking the Kamchatka peninsular.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) KAMCHATKA REGION EMERGENCY MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON, YULIA ANANIEVA, SAYING:
"The underground quake took place near the western coast of the Kamchatka peninsula around 6pm. It was about 560 kilometres away from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The citizens of the capital of the region felt the magnitude of a 4.5 - 5 earthquake."
The quake, which was felt as far away as northern Japan, briefly caused Russian authorities to issue a tsunami warning, although this was later rescinded.
Friday's tremor is the latest in a series to strike the peninsula in the last few days, prompting some residents to leave the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
