Sakhalin was Russia’s largest penal colony. It was established in 1869 and abolished in 1908. After that the island was declared free for colonisation. The island was visited in 1890 by the famous Russian write A. Chekhov. He stayed there 3 months, and this resulted in the book “Ostrov Sakhalin”
The movie is based on images mostly made at the end of the 19th century and shows a view of the life of prisoners on Sakhalin.
