United States Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Stockholm on Tuesday for talks with Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.

The talks are set to focus on current foreign policy issues such as the developments in Syria, the possibilities of creating a new momentum in the Middle East peace process and the international community's future involvement in Afghanistan.

Also on the agenda is the economic situation in the European Union and the negotiations about a future free trade agreement between the EU and the United States.

Later in the day, Kerry will fly to the northern Swedish town of Kiruna for an Arctic Council meeting.

Among other things, the council will agree on ways to work together to prevent and deal with oil spills in the region that is opening up fast to shipping, energy and mining companies.
