Inmates Reviewing Prisons on Yelp

Inmates are reviewing prisons on yelp.

Beyond just restaurants, the review website Yelp, is logging prison reviews by inmates, attorneys and general jail visitors.

Robert Miller, who works as a lawyer, has left three reviews thus far on prison establishments. Two were negative, citing poor staff, but one in Orange County, California was praised for kind deputies and good sanitation.

Miller states “I think the reviews are actually helpful for bail bondsmen, attorneys, family members — a lot of people, actually.” (1,3,5) The trend seems to be spreading, with many inmates becoming Yelpers looking to pass the time or perhaps improve jail conditions. Some complain about poor treatment by corrections officers and others praise the food.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff spokesperson states “This Yelp phenomenon I find curious. Jail isn’t a restaurant. It isn’t seeing a movie. You’re doing time for committing a crime.”

Last year, inmates at the Lebanon Correctional Institution in Ohio took a different approach to boredom and joined a crochet group! Called the 'Real Men Crochet' program, it enrolled inmates in crocheting to create hats and other garments for charity programs and shelters.
