WHO says China bird flu strain "lethal"

Experts say a new strain of bird flu that has killed 22 people in China is "one of the most lethal" of its kind.

Since it was first detected in March, at least 108 people have been infected by the strain of virus known as H7N9.

A team from the World Health Organisation (WHO) is monitoring the outbreak.

They say the virus appears to be more easily passed to humans than an earlier deadly strain.

SOUNDBITE: (English) WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION ASSISTANT DIRECTOR-GENERAL FOR HEALTH SECURITY KEIJI FUKUDA SAYING:

"There are some other examples of other influenza viruses which are very dangerous for humans. You know, I think the H5N1 bird flu virus is one of the most famous examples of how dangerous an influenza virus can be for people in terms of being lethal. But this is definitely one of the most lethal influenza viruses that we've seen so far."
