A 1,200-year-old tree succumbs to strong winds.

An oak tree in Wales that was believed to be around 12 hundred years old was pushed over by strong 60 mile per hour winds.

The Pontfadog Oak has historical significance, and plays a part in a Welsh legend about a prince rallying troops before they defeated the British army, along with being the meeting place for other troops throughout history.

It measured 42 feet 5 inches around, and Rob McBride, who measures and logs trees said: "The tree was one of the biggest and oldest oak trees on the planet.”

The loss of this tree has shined a light on the issue of maintaining important old growth trees.

There is talk of putting the tree back up, because of its historical significance.

Problems with old growth trees not being protected or being cut down for logging are having an effect on global climate change.

Rob Fleming, the National Democratic Party of Canada’s environmental expert said: “I think we need to look at gaps in the current laws and designated protected areas and look at why 900-year-old trees and stands are not protected.”
