James Brown performs "That's Life"--Live at the Apollo Theater in New York City, March 1968. James Brown: Man to Man was a concert film recorded live at the Apollo Theater. It was broadcast as an hour-long syndicated television special and is one of the first color recordings of James Brown.

"That's Life" is a popular song written by Dean Kay and Kelly Gordon and first recorded by Marion Montgomery. The most famous version is by Frank Sinatra, released on his 1966 album of the same name. James Brown's version and recording of this song is considered a notable one.

James Brown: I want you to know that I'm innocent because I'm right here with my friends.

Audience: Friends.

James Brown: My friends, my friends to do that over again but that's life that's what people say riding high in April shot down in May because I got to change that tune back on top in June. So that's life funny as it may seem. Some people get their kicks stomping on a dream but never ever let it get me down because the world keeps spinning around. I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, poet, a pawn and a king. I've been up and down and over and out and I know one thing every time I find myself flat on my face. I pick myself up and get back in the race. That is life. No need to deny it. I thought of quitting but you know my heart wouldn't buy. Alright but then I'll fly. I'd jump right on a big bird and then. I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate. I've been up and down and over and out I know one thing. Every time I find myself laying flat on my face. I just pick myself up and get back in the race. That's life. That's life and I can't deny it. Many times I thought of cutting out. I'll say it one more time. I'll say it one more time. That's life. There's no need to deny it. But if there's nothing shaking come this July.
