Why Do Retailers Ask for Our Zip Codes?

Exploring why retailers ask for our zip codes.

These days many retailers seem to want answers to an unending and unrelenting battery of questions before you leave their store.

It’s advisable that you think twice before you answer.

Your zip code, benign as it seems, can be used for all sorts of marketing purposes including direct mail and unsolicited phone calls.

For example, once a retailer has your name and zip code they can locate your exact address.

Though not every retailer is trying to get into your mailbox. Some stores merely want to ensure they’re supplying you and your community with adequate access and selection.

On occasion the information is required as verification means by the issuer of your credit card. If the information isn’t for this purpose, you can decline to give it or, if you want to avoid more potential questions, make one up.

Then again, some people like getting stuff in the mail. A 2011 survey conducted by Epsilon Marketing showed that about 60 percent of Americans enjoy getting information about new products the old fashioned way.
