Google street view adds tsunami-destroyed Japanese town.
Google Street View has published a virtual tour of the Japanese town Namie.
The town was devastated two years ago following the deadly tsunami and subsequent triple nuclear meltdown at Fukushima.
The streetscapes are bleak and filled with abandoned buildings, overturned cars, and overgrown weeds.
Google vehicles equipped with cameras able to produce 360-degree virtual tours went to Naime upon the request of its mayor. He invited them out of fear that the world was forgetting the devastation brought by Fukushima.
Those who lived closest to the power plant may not be able to return home for decades because of the contamination.
Naime’s mayor said, "We want this Street View imagery to become a permanent record of what happened to Namie in the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster."
Japan’s rebuilding plans for the area include better protection against future natural disasters.
In December of 2011 the parliament passed laws requiring that construction in the geographically at-risk areas be tsunami-safe. They also plan to implement zoning restrictions and improve evacuation procedures.
