Thousands of teachers in the third largest US city of Chicago are protesting against plans to shut down schools in poor neighbourhoods.

The city's council said the closures are needed to plug a $1bn dollar budget gap.

Critics of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, however, said he is targeting schools with mostly low-income and minority students.
