Syrian rebel leader survives assassination attempt

A leader of the Free Syrian Army survives an assassination attempt but loses his leg in the attempt on his life.

Colonel Riad al-Asaad, founder of the rebel Free Syrian Army is now under treatment in Turkey. He survived an overnight blast caused by a bomb placed beneath his car. Authorities say hiss life is not in danger.

Asaad, was one of the first senior officers to defect from the Syrian military.

His deputy told Al Jazeera television that he believed the Syrian government was behind the assassination attempt.

No one initially claimed responsibility for the attack.
