Colombian coffee growers continued to block roads on Friday (March 01), as talks broke down on the fifth day of a nationwide strike.

Thousands of frustrated coffee workers have been off the job since Monday (February 25).

On Friday, the Colombian government and protest leaders failed to reach an agreement after 13 hours of negotiations.

Protesters are demanding an increase in government subsidies to compensate for falling coffee prices and meager harvests.

Colombia is the world's biggest producer of high-quality Arabica coffee beans.
