Family of Delhi rape victim demand death penalty

The New Delhi courthouse where five men accused of the rape and murder of an Indian woman-- a brutal assault that sent shockwaves through the nation-- stand trial.

On Tuesday, the family of the victim called for the suspects to receive death sentences.

"I just keep thinking that all six accused should be hanged," the father of the victim told the media.

The attack on the 23-year old medical student led to mass demonstrations across the country and a shake-up of laws against sex crimes.

Under new proposed legislation, gang rape that leads to death would be punishable by death and minimum penalties raised to 20 years in prison for gang rape and rape of a minor.

The laws must later be ratified by parliament.

But the brother of the victim said he was more interested in justice for his sister than the implementation of any new laws.

"Whatever recommendations were made by the Justice Verma Committee, my father and I did not pay any attention to them. We are just concerned about our case and we want all of them to be hanged."

The five accused have all pleaded not guilty.

A sixth accused is a juvenile and will be tried separately, according to police.
