JAMES OF DARKWOOD - SILHOUETTES

PRESENTED BY CHERYL

The sounds that fall from the mouths of Albertan quintet James of Dark Wood illuminate far more than the youthful members and plaintive curves of the prairies would suggest. From beneath, the grotesque mimicries of tragedy, and from above, the resolve to move ever forward. While we seek catharsis in grandeur, James of Dark Wood have found it in choral assurances and folk laden constructs.

Steady, finger picked guitar backed by the mutterings of hollow flutes, rumbling percussion, bowed bass, and tip-toeing piano create the stage for the ghostly voices of the mid-west to lament their songs of loss, hope, and self-forgiveness. A cinematic experience unfolds on each stage, as the waves of harmony beats itself restlessly against the coast of their music. Each member adding cautiously to the whole, no matter how subtle or grand. The nine months of calculating for a single EP shows itself in every nuance, never expanding beyond or shying inwards from the core of their message and sound.

Simply put, James of Dark Wood is a humble orchestra, dedicated to the pains and triumphs of their lives. Gaining momentum quickly across the West, this Beaumont based group premieres itself as a choral folk storybook, both enamoured in the search for resolve, and tethered faithfully to themselves as they scan the dusty horizons for whatever ship is meant to lift a yearning heart from the love of a childhood home to the timelessness that created it.
