Nigel Spink feels owner Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner has to spend some money in the transfer window - if the club are to keep their Premier League status.
The former Villans goalkeeper spent 19 years at the club, before playing for the rivals West Brom.
Villa are currently 17th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone, but have a worse goal difference than any of the clubs below them.
