FAA Warns on Exploding Coffee Filters

The FAA issues a warning to flight attendants over exploding coffee filters.

The Federal Aviation Administration has warned that coffee filters used by many airlines may pose potential dangers.

Their website says that the prepackaged filters might cause pressure to build up, which can then lead to an explosion when the coffee pot is lifted to pour a drink.

If the coffee filters are not used properly they can block the flow of water from dripping through to brew the coffee, and the pressure can send hot water and coffee grounds splashing through the air or onto a flight attendant or airline customer.

Exploding coffee filters have been the cause of several second and third degree burn to passengers and flight crewmembers.

A study from the Brunel University in London has exposed another potential danger caused by airline food.

The study says that inconsistencies and lack of information are leading to allergic reactions to airline food.

Doctor Jane Lucas, a respiratory and allergy specialist from the Southampton General Hospital and the University of Southampton said: “This study demonstrates that, despite nut allergic individuals taking extremely sensible steps to remain safe, airlines are consistently putting lives at risk and are yet to make any significant steps towards taking this risk seriously.”
