Wildfires destroyed several houses in New Zealand's earthquake shattered city of Christchurch on Thursday (January 10).

Local broadcaster TV3 reported that the flames had claimed up to four homes as well as paddocks.

In total, an area of 150 hectares has been destroyed, but no one is believed to have died and no injuries have been reported, TV3 said.

Christchurch resident Amy Thorsby lost her home in the fire. She said she was unable to get insurance, following the earthquake in 2011.

"All of us had a lot of photos that have been burnt and we've got like no insurance on the house or anything because of the earthquake."

According to media reports, several helicopters and 20 fire trucks were battling the flames for almost two hours until they managed to douse the fire.

Christchurch is still struggling to redevelop its city centre after a devastating earthquake in February 2011 killed 185 people, making it the second-deadliest natural disaster recorded in New Zealand.
