Politician attacked after allegedly raping a woman in India

An unusual sight in India - angry women take matters into their own hands and attack a prominent politician accused of rape.

Bikram Singh Brahma, a leader from India's ruling Congress Party in the northeastern state of Assam, allegedly raped a mother-of-two on Thursday.

Irate villagers also vandalized Brahma's vehicle as they demanded he be severely punished for the alleged assault.

Brahma was apparently handed over to local police after the attack.

In Delhi, a senior Congress party official confirmed that a woman, apparently the wife of one of Brahma's friends, had levelled charges against Brahma.

He added that a case had been registered and Brahma was under arrest.

The attack comes in the wake of public outrage in India over the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman on a public bus in New Delhi last month.

That attack has resulted in widespread protests across the country amid calls for tougher legislation against rapists.
