Rebels close in on key airport in northern Syria

The Free Syrian Army closes in on an airport near Aleppo City.

They take it a step at a time in the face of government airpower.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) A COMMANDER IN NORTH STORM BRIGADE, ABU TAMMAM, SAYING:

"We advanced around 200 meters toward the airport, we disabled about six tanks and destroyed a plane, then we withdrew because of the air strikes, we came under pressure"

They pass by unexploded bombs..

They face government forces that are dug in.

Short of ammunition they prepare to fight any way they can.

Elsewhere in the country the battle rages on.

Amateur video which could not be independently verified by Reuters show people -- terrified running through the blood stained streets in suburban Damascus. Rights groups say 120 were killed on Friday alone.

The sound of sirens prevail in war ravaged streets.

More than 44,000 people have been killed in Syria since a popular uprising began in March 2011. And yet the demonstrations go on.

As world powers debate their future in Syria -- they are still on the streets calling for change.
