Alastair Cook was finally dismissed for 190, in bizarre circumstances to a run out by Virat Kohli, but England, thanks to contributions from Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen and Matthew Prior, were able to build a substantial lead by stumps.

Cook was batting beautifully until his departure while Trott put a recent run of low scores behind him to make a valuable 87. Pietersen hit 54 and Prior was unbeaten on 40 having counter-attacked in the final session to put England 193 runs ahead.

Although there were no Pietersen sixes during his innings he batted fluently leaving the switch hits to Trott and Prior and with England's lead approaching 200, their dream of a series win in India remains very much alive.

Cook's run out dismissal was the first time he had been dismissed run out in 312 first-class innings. He now has been run out as many times in Tests as Sachin Tendulkar has been stumped - just the once.
