Excess production capacity among European carmakers is now affecting plants in the East of the continent.

Fiat is laying off a third of its workforce in Poland due to a slump in sales.

1,500 staff who produce the Fiat 500 at its plant in the southern city of Tychy will be affected.

This year, production is expected to fall by almost half, compared to 2009 figures.
