Thousands displaced in eastern Congo

Marie Vigabe fled her home as violence rages across the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

She found safety in a refugee camp. But she doesn't want to be there.

(SOUNDBITE) (Swahili) INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSON, MARIA VIGABE, SAYING:

"We want to go back home, we want our children to go back to school. Our children are just suffering here at this camp."

Thousands are displaced in the region. The UN is now distributing food.

M23 rebels, thought to be backed by Rwanda, already won control of Goma. The rebels show no sign of quitting and plan to march on other cities in the east.

As the displaced are making do, the government says it will not negotiate with rebels until they leave Goma. But a rebel spokesman says Kinshasa is in no position to set conditions on peace talks.
