Egyptians remember anniversary of deadly clashes

Several thousand Egyptians gathered in a street in downtown Cairo on Monday (November 19) commemorating clashes that left 40 dead and more injured last year.
The clashes erupted in 2011 after riot police had cleared out a sit-in, in Tahrir square, the epicentre of Egypt's revolution. The thousands that had then converged onto Tahrir demanded the Military Council, who led the country at the time, resign.
During last year's clashes, police and protesters fired tear gas and threw stones at each other, respectively, for five continuous days.
Minor clashes erupted on Monday night between riot police and stone-throwing Egyptians in Alexandria, after a parallel protest there to the Cairo demonstration.
