The faint drum of explosions in the distance.

From a hilltop in Israel, this footage shows ongoing air strikes on the Gaza Strip as Israeli warplanes launch a barrage of bombs and missiles.

At least 10 people have died so far in Gaza, including the head of Hamas' military wing Ahmed al-Jaabari - killed on Wednesday in an air strike on his car.

Launched during a deceptive lull in almost a week of surging cross-border violence, Israel's air assault has an intensity recalling the 2008-2009 Gaza War that left over 1,100 Palestinians dead.

Around a dozen Israelis were killed in that conflict.

Israeli police said more than 80 rockets have been fired from Gaza since Jaabari's death.

But at least three people were killed on Thursday when a rocket landed in southern Israel.

On Wednesday night the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss Israel's attacks on Gaza, but it took no action.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that he's considering the possibility of sending troops into Gaza as part of a ground assault.
