I'll sing a hymn of Mary - Chris Lawton at St Peter & St Paul Catholic Church, Lichfield
  • 11 years ago
Me playing the organ at St Peter & St Paul Roman Catholic Church in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

The church was built as part of the new Dimbles housing estate in the mid 1960s and the organ is the model 363 electrone built by the famous John Compton Organ Company Ltd. The organ happily remains in original condition using the electrostatic principals of tone production and is regularly maintained. Two Compton patent 'rotofon' speakers are used situated on the walls each side of the church and enchanced further by superb acoustics. The organ is a wonderful example of a Compton 'electrone' organ.

For this first video im playing the hymn 'I'll sing a hymn of Mary' which gives the idea of what the organ sounds like for accompanying congregational hymn singing.

These organs are fast becoming extinct with many churches replacing them with digital instruments etc. Modern technology is indeed appealing with its realistic sampled sounds but history is being lost as a result. Opportunities should be taken to see that these unique instruments are preserved for future generations to experience how technology worked in the pre digital era.

Many thanks to the church officials here for allowing me access to this fine Compton organ and for a wonderful welcome.

NOTE: this is purely my interest in order to make sure that these fine organs are archived forever and I do not make any monetary profit by this video being on dailymotion.
