Paul McCartney: Yoko Ono not to blame for Beatles break up

Paul McCartney has spoken out in defense of Yoko Ono, who 40 years on is still accused by some fans of breaking up the Beatles.

McCartney said in an interview to be shown on the Al Jazeera English TV channel in November, that the Beatles were already winding down by the time Lennon started to become involved with Yoko Ono, according to the Guardian newspaper.

Lennon and Yoko married in 1969, a year before the band's break up.

McCartney said that without the "avant garde" Yoko, songs such as "Imagine" would never have been written.

McCartney, instead, lays a lot of the blame on late-era Beatles manager Allen Klein.
