Amateur video captures heavy shelling in Syria

Smoke rises above the skyline of Homs -- as shelling continues in the war-torn country of Syria.

Video obtained from a social media website purported to show more destruction in Idlib -- the aftermath of what now is a full-blown civil war.

A human rights organization said at least 140 people in were killed in country on Wednesday - including more than 60 unarmed civilians.

More amateur video shows survivors searching for family members -- where a witness says an aircraft had dropped a missile, destroying several houses.

Activists said more than 30,000 people have been killed in fighting since the uprising against President Bashir al-Assad began last March.

After warning the crisis could spread across the Middle East, international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi announced he will go to the capital Damascus within the next few days.

His hope is to broker a ceasefire between Assad's forces and the rebels - to coincide with Islamic holiday Eid which starts next week.
