A 23 year old woman in Phoenix, Arizona who suffered an internal decapitation got a chance to meet face to face with the firefighters who saved her life. Rachel Bailey is recovering after a tragic automobile accident back in September 2011 that separated her skull from her spine, and left her in the hospital for about a month.
She survived the usually fatal injury, and can now get up to walk and talk, though she can’t remember the five weeks after the accident. People who survive this kind of injury are usually left paralyzed, but KTLA reports that doctors at John C. Lincoln Hospital's Intensive Care Unit who treated Bailey reattached her head to her spine using metal plates and bone grafts.
“It's emotional to see her and see her doing so well," said fire Captain Wayde Kline, who made dinner for Bailey and her family along with the other firefighters. He added: "As firefighters, we often see patients at their worst. This reminds us the people we take care of are someone's son, daughter, mother or father."
