Recently, the quiet Dutch town of Haren witnessed a massive riot due to a Facebook invite sent by a 16-year-old girl for her birthday party.

The invitation she sent had gone viral and video footage revealed attendees throwing stones, glass bottles and even bicycles.

Store windows were smashed, leading to the arrest of almost three dozen people. According to reports, the girl forgot to mark the event as private which led to 20,000 replies and several websites promoting the celebration.

Thousands showed up for the party but hundreds of police officers were already making preparations for the predicted disaster. Dozens of people were injured during the ordeal, but local officials claim that the partygoers will pay, both in terms of justice and money for the crimes committed.

Last year, the British Prime Minister, David Cameron blamed social media sites as Twitter and Facebook were reportedly used to organize London riots. Cameron stated “when people are using social media for violence, we need to stop them.”
