Twenty trapped miners have been confirmed dead after a coal mine accident early on Tuesday (September 25), Chinese state media reported.

CCTV, quoting local authorities said they were killed in the mine after a cart lifting them to ground level slipped in a pit.

A total of 34 miners were in the two-cart carriage, CCTV reported.

Authorities said the carriage was designed to carry just 10 passengers, and the carts were clearly overweight with 34 people.

Out of the 14 injured, three are suffering from serious injuries, CCTV reported.

The coal mine, which began operations in 2003, has an annual production capacity of 90,000 tonnes, CCTV said.

China has the world's deadliest coal-mining industry. Safety improvements have reduced the number of deaths in recent years but safety rules are often ignored.
