BELLS BEACH, Victoria/Australia (Friday, April 22, 2011) -- Bells Beach turned on crisp three-to-five (1 -- 1.5 metre) waves in the Bowl for Round 3 of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Ranger.
The second stop on the 2011 ASP World Title season, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach has already bore witness to two exciting rounds of competition, the first in the Bowl and the second at nearby Winkipop, and today the world's best surfers took to the Bells lineup to battle for points, prize money and the ever-coveted ASP World Title.
Kelly Slater (USA), 39, scraped through a quiet heat against wildcard Stu Kennedy (AUS), 21. Slater only managed a heat total of 11.34 (out of a possible 20), but it was enough to progress to the next round. Bells Beach is renowned for long lulls and today it was Slater who suffered the slow heat.
The 10x time world champ dodged a bullet after he left the door open for Kennedy, in their round three, match-up. In the dying minutes, of the low scoring heat, defending champion Slater gave up priority for a wave that offered no scoring potential leaving Kennedy with the final set wave. Kennedy failed to capitalize, eliminated in equal 13th.
Slater admitted he was out of rhythm today.
The 39 year-old added that Joel Parkinson (Aus) had to maintain his early standard for the event duration whereas he was looking forward to peaking later.
Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, two times Rip Curl Pro Bells Champion showed why he's always a threat on the Bells Bowl, carving up the long walls with his trademark casual style to eliminate Frenchman Jeremy Flores (FRA), 22. Parkinson punctuated the heat with an excellent wave, scoring 9.2 (out of a possible 10).
Thirty year-old Parkinson looked ominous from the outset claiming a combination win over Flores (Bra) to continue his run as the form surfer of the event so far. The natural-footer scoring a heat total of 18.13 (out of possible 20.00) to Flores' 8.16 heat tally.
Flores who is still recovering from a knee injury credited the Gold Coast Suns Football Teams Physio department for getting him back in the water so quickly. The European has been residing on the Gold Coast while rehabilitating from the injury that forced him to withdraw from the opening event.
Former two times world champ Mick Fanning (Aus) defeated fellow Gold Coaster Josh Kerr (Aus) in a convincing victory 13.50 to 7.77 (out of possible 20.00) in the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Bells today.
In sloppy 3-4 foot onshore conditions, Fanning came out firing with a 6.50 and followed up with a 7.00, seamlessly linking 3 impressive turns in tricky conditions.
Kerr responded early on by spraying a massive cutback in Fanning's face and attacking a backside air reverse, but failed to land any outstanding maneuvers.
Fanning said his game plan was to put Kerr on the back foot from the heat start.
Californian goofy-footer Bobby Martinez (USA) failed to repeat his firing RD2 performance going down to a super-consistent Jordy Smith (SAF) 12.66 to 13.27 (out of possible 20.00). Martinez couldn't find the 6.45 he needed on his final wave and was visibly frustrated as the siren blew, leaving Smith to progress through to round 4.
World no.9 Adriano De Souza (BRA), 24, showed that coming 2 weeks early to get some practice time in at Bells pays off, by eliminating Round 1 standout Adam Melling (AUS), 26 in the second heat of the day. De Souza surf sharp and fast and finished the heat with a commanding lead 16.76 to Mellng's 10.67.
Lennox Head surfer Owen Wright (AUS), 21, defeated Gabe Kling (USA), 30, in the opening heat of Round 3 this morning. With the low tide conditions causing a lack of waves in the 30 minute match-up Wright used better wave selection to post a heat total of 12:33 whereas his opponent Kling only managed one ride to finish on a heat total 5.90.
Wright said despite Bells being tide-affected for his heat conditions would get epic later in the morning.
World no.3 Tiagp Pires (PRT) continued to impress the judges with a convincing win over Damien Hobgood (USA). The Portuguese surfer posted one of the days top heat scores of 17.67 to secure a round four berth in the Rip Curl Pro Bells event.
