Have you ever wanted to own a piece of the moon? Well now you can, for the right price. The largest moon rock ever put up for auction could get an estimated asking price of over three hundred forty thousand dollars.

The fourth largest piece of the moon made available to the public market, the rock, called Dar al Gani 1058, weighs in at four pounds. Found in Libya in 1998, the rock fell to Earth from the far side of the moon.

The starting bid is one hundred seventy thousand dollars, and is expected to double by the time the auction closes in mid-October.

The market for moon rocks is influenced by the origin of the rock, with pieces of the moon brought back by man-made robotic probes receiving a higher price tag than those that naturally fell to Earth.

No moon rocks collected by the Apollo astronauts were given to individuals, although many were given to countries around the world as gifts. A reported one hundred sixty out of two hundred seventy of these rocks are missing, stolen, or unaccounted for. In addition, eighteen moon rocks that were gifted to US states are also unaccounted for.
