NATO confirms Afghan civilian deaths in airstrike

"Death to America" yell protesters in Afghanistan's eastern Laghman province on Sunday.

The demonstrators gathered after a NATO airstrike killed eight civilians and a number of insurgents there early Sunday morning.

A NATO spokesman confirmed the civilian casualties, explaining that the mission had targeted insurgents.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) INTERNATIONAL SECURITY ASSISTANCE FORCE (ISAF) SPOKESMAN, BRIGADIER GENERAL GUNTER KATZ SAYING:

"The International Security Assistance Force extends its deepest regrets and sympathies to the families and loved ones of civilians who died or were injured during a coalition airstrikes on 16 of September in Laghman province."

Civilian deaths undermine support both in Afghanistan and the United States for the battle here, against Taliban insurgents.
