Watch residents in Novosibirsk, Russia, brave the elements to piece together the world's biggest jigsaw puzzle...

Full Story:

Residents in the Russian city of Novosibirsk have pieced together a giant jigsaw puzzle 300 square meters in size.

The huge jigsaw sits proudly outside the State Academic Ballet and Opera Theatre.

1023 pieces come together to recreate the world famous painting "Self Portrait" by Albrecht Durer.

The fun activity forms part of a series of events held across the country to celebrate the Year of Germany in Russia.

[Julia Hanske, Goethe Institute in Novosibirsk, Head]:
"We conceived this idea a long time ago with our colleagues in Moscow. The event was initiated by the city of Nuremberg where Albrecht Durer comes from. They created the idea and offered it to us as a part of the Year of Germany in Russia. We were pleased to organize this puzzle gathering in our city. We are happy to see citizens and guests of the city putting this big icon of art together."

More than 200 people took part, spending over three hours in the rain and cold to assemble the giant puzzle.

[Alesya Zadvornova, Event Participant]:
"The picture is very big, and there were lots of people wishing to participate, forming large queues to get their puzzle piece. The event is very well organized, people were putting pieces down one by one forming the rows. The only biggest obstacles were probably rain and a relatively cold weather."

The jigsaw kicked of it's Russian tour in Moscow, and will continue to travel across the country as a part of a series of events designed to strengthen Russian-German relations.

The city of Nuremberg has successfully organized similar events in China, Poland, Italy, and Nuremberg itself.
