US jobless rate falls to three-year low

The US has been showing signs of recovery for the first time in nearly three years.

The jobless rate has dropped to 8.5 per cent, the lowest since February 2009.

At least 200,000 jobs were created last month, a figure that surpassed the expectations of economists who estimated an increase of around 150,000.

But with 13.1m unemployed people, the US economy needs more job growth over a longer period of time to recover significantly.

The slight boost to the economy could be good news for President Barack Obama, who faces an election later this year.

Al Jazeera' John Hendren reports from the White House in Washington.
