Woman Overcharged for 25 Years, Paid for Streetlights - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

A homeowner has resolved a dispute with Connecticut Light and Power, after they charged her for the power to neighborhood streetlights for 25 years. The previous owner of the house had agreed to pay for the streetlight’s power, but when Mrs. Edwards and her late husband purchased the house a quarter century ago, the charges were never taken off the bill and she has been paying them ever since. She was alerted to the situation when an interested buyer asked to see the utility bills. She contacted Connecticut Light and Power, but they were reportedly not helpful. Edwards was forced to contact the Consumer Council to get reimbursement. In the end, Edwards’ total reimbursement came to ten thousand five hundred dollars, which averages over the 25-year period to about 35 dollars a month.

The utility company also apologized and Connecticut Light and Power spokesman Mitch Gross said: “We have reimbursed her in the amount that she was incorrectly billed plus interest, and will be using this case as a learning experience.”
