Egyptian army advances into Sinai

The Egyptian army moves into villages in the Sinai Peninsula Wednesday amid reports that militants are seeking safety in the area.

On Sunday gunmen killed 16 border guards in the bloodiest attack on security forces in Sinai in decades.

The militants have sworn to destroy Israel. They have stepped up attacks in the desert frontier following the uprising that toppled Egypt's government last year.

As the dead have been put to rest, Egypt's new government has tried to assure Israel that it will keep Sinai under control.

Sunday's attack was the bloodiest since 1979 when Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel, an accord which brought an end to a succession of wars between the two countries.
