In Tunisia, a demonstration against job cuts in the public sector turned violent on Tuesday.
Witnesses said a group of protesters went on a looting rampage in the city of Kasserine.
Security forces reportedly refused to intervene even when a mob entered the town hall to abuse those workers who had refused to strike.
