One Dies, Three Injured Falling into Sinkhole in Changsha, China

One person was killed and three were injured early Thursday morning in China's Hunan province, after a giant sinkhole opened up in the middle of Xiangjiang Road in Changsha city. It engulfed the BMW car they were travelling in.

According to Xinhuanet, China, the pit opening was about 30 square meters, and
very deep.

An underground municipal project is under construction not far from the site.

The Xiangjiang River flows nearby.

Sinkholes have become common in China in recent months.

On June 7 a sinkhole at a busy intersection in Guilin City, Guangxi Province, suddenly opened engulfing a van and injuring the driver.

In early June, sinkholes appeared in villages around Naning, causing a building to collapse and damaging several others.

More than 800 people were evacuated.

Some experts believe changes in underground water levels are the cause of various sinkholes. But others say that man is responsible for taking too much of the earth's natural resources.
