Pakistan were set a record score of 510 to win but were bowled out for 300 despite a valiant effort on the final day and it was Sri Lanka who produced a record. Never before had they beaten Pakistan by so many runs in a Test and they did so having dominated the game throughout.

Kumar Sangakkara batting hit 199 not out in Sri Lanka's first innings, Tillakaratne Dilshan scored a century and a half-century while Suraj Randiv picked up seven wickets in the match.

Pakistan never recovered from being dismissed for 100 in reply to 472, meaning half-centuries on the final day from Younus Khan and Asad Shafiq were in vain.

The second Test in Colombo begins on 30th June.
