Afghan army puts foreign boots on ground

Once hailed as a model for the country's economic development, the Afghan Milli Boot factory now risks bankruptcy.

NATO commissioned the shoe manufacturer to produce boots for the Afghan army but, ahead of the 2014 NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Afghan government is now making such decisions.

In this case, it has chosen a cheaper deal abroad, overlooking the local producer.

Business leaders however, say that this is not only due to cheaper options available outside the country, but also due to one of the country's most pressing issues: corruption.
