STORY: "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson has returned to the French Riviera to promote his latest film, "Cosmopolis" by Canadian director David Cronenberg, in which he plays a ruthless billionaire on a journey to self-destruction.

The movie, a searing attack on greed and capitalism, is based on the Don DeLillo novel of the same name, depicting a world where characters cannot communicate, and people joke that rats could be the new currency.

The film is competing for the festival's top prize to be awarded on Sunday.

Early reactions to the film in Cannes have been mixed, with one critic calling it "stilted, self-important and fantastically shallow", and another one describing "Cosmopolis" as a "film of cool, diamond brilliance."
