A "state of calamity" has been declared in Guatemala, where about 54,000 families are struggling to feed their children.

A severe drought and a reduction in the amount of money sent back by people working overseas is being blamed for the crisis.

Changing weather patterns and a slowdown in remittances sent from the US are being blamed for the situation.

Al Jazeera's David Mercer visited the so-called Dry-Corridor in the eastern part of the country, Jalapa, and sent this report.
