Somewhere around 200 thousand text messages are sent every second, so it’s no wonder that studies are being done to see how people’s communication with each other is being affected.

According to researchers, people tell the truth more over text messages than while talking on the phone. Participants in a University of Michigan study responded more honestly to survey questions over text message about how often they exercise and how many times in the past month they had 5 or more drinks at a time. University of Michigan’s director of the program for Survery Methodology Fred Conrad said "This is sort of surprising since many people thought that texting would decrease the likelihood of disclosing sensitive information because it creates a persistent, visual record of questions and answers that others might see on your phone.”

Surveys from 2011 have shown that 31 percent of people who use text messaging prefer that mode of communication to talking on the phone, with each cell phone user sending an average of around 41 text messages per day. Among all groups of teens, text messaging is preferred over any other interaction between friends, including face to face interaction and talking on the phone.
