Back on the streets in Bahrain

Thousands march on a highway in Bahrain, calling for the release of prisoners.

They are seeking the release of a hunger-striking leader of the uprising whose detention has drawn international criticism.

The ruling monarchy has rejected calls for an elected government and parliament with full legislative powers. It has called the opposition lackeys of Shi'ite giant Iran.

Demonstrators say there is nothing unique about their demands.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) UNIDENTIFIED PROTESTER SAYING:

"Of course, our demands in Bahrain are the demands of everybody for years - democracy, change of regime, and the release of prisoners. These are the demands of everyone else in the world. We want the same things."

The demonstrations come as the United States said Friday that it will resume some military sales to Bahrain.

Bahrain has been the host of U.S. naval headquarters in the Gulf for more than 60 years and is seen key for U.S. efforts to deter Iran.
