Soil from the spot where Gandhi was assassinated fetches 10,000 pounds (16,000 USD) at auction. The Indian holy leader's spectacles fetched an unexpectedly high price.
Soil from the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 has sold at an auction in England for 10,000 GBP (16,000 USD).
Items that belonged to the man fondly known as the "Father of India" went under the hammer on Tuesday at British auction house Mullock's at Ludlow Racecourse in Shropshire.
Other memorabilia included a pair of his round-rimmed glasses, a wooden "charka," or spinning wheel and some letters.
Richard Westwood-Brookes is an historical documents specialist for the auction house.

"Well what we are selling amongst the many other things to do with history is a very important collection to do with Mahatma Gandhi and these have come in from a collector who has cherished them for many, many years."
He commented on a box containing soil and a drop of the revered Indian holy leader's blood.
[Richard Westwood-Brookes, Historical Documents Specialist]:
"This is the samples of the soil, as you can see there is not much there, but if you are a believer in Gandhi and a follower of his doctrines then this is exactly the same as a medieval Christian relic with fragments of saints bones and things like that."
Gandhi's spectacles, bought from an optician in Gloucestershire, were expected to fetch 10,000GBP (16,000 USD), but in the end went for 34,000GBP (54,190USD).

"Well what we have here is the glasses, the spectacles which are obviously of Gandhi's iconic design, these completely round lenses were iconic of Gandhi and all of the images you have of Gandhi he is wearing glasses such as this."
