Brazil's former President Lula announced on Wednesday that his throat cancer had been cured, after successful treatment.

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) BRAZIL'S FORMER PRESIDENT LUIZ INACIO LULA DA SILVA, SAYING:

"Today I received the most important news that any human being could receive after a five-month battle against cancer. I received the news that we were able to beat this cancer. So I would like to thank God right now, because without Him, this would probably have not been possible."

Sao Paulo's Sirio Libanes Hospital said latest tests on the 66-year-old show no visible signs of a tumour.

Lula is Brazil's most popular politician, known for his anti-poverty programs and credited for the country's strong economic growth in recent years.

He said would return to politics because Brazil must keep growing and millions and millions more should be given a chance to be part of the country's growing middle class.
