French President Nicolas Sarkozy has paid tribute to police involved in the operation in Toulouse that ended in the death of suspected multiple killer Mohamed Merah.

He told French people that their Muslim compatriots had nothing to do with the "mad motivations of a terrorist". He also announced a crackdown on people following extremist websites.
