Sao Paolo's carnival judges were just minutes away from announcing the Brazilian city's champion samba troupe when violence flared.

A man allegedly from the Imperio de Casa Verde samba troupe which risked being downgraded from the elite group of schools leapt a security fence and tore up the results.

The incident ignited a series of other attacks as upset supporters of other samba groups invaded the judges' area, overturning chairs and tables.

Some carnival floats parked nearby were also set alight.

Police arrested several people but were unable to salvage all of the score sheets. The president of Sao Paolo's league of samba schools said there were no copies.

He said the final results would be decided after a meeting with the heads of all the groups competing for the title.

Members of some samba groups said they were unhappy with the judges' original results because they suspected some had been bribed.
